Stealing Creation

Posted By:  the big m2 @ Nov 11 2008, 04:16 PM
Stealing Creation is only accessible to RuneScape Members. Please subscribe to get this feature.

Please note this is a 'Safe' minigame. On the other hand, as all equipment you can carry is made during the game, you will drop all items when you die, and no gravestone will protect them. You can use the Protect Item prayer to retain one item as normal.

Introduction

The Wilderness is an awful place cursed by the suffering of the God Wars, and the awful slaughter and god-like powers that created it have left a scar upon RuneScape. Perhaps because of this it has become a site for strange phenomena where the boundaries between the worlds are thinner than usual.

One of these bizarre features is a portal to a plane composed solely of 'sacred clay', the stuff of creation itself. It is likely that, in the earliest times of the universe, the gods themselves fashioned their followers from this clay, not to mention all manner of beasts, rocks and plants. Living and unliving, all things were first formed from this strange substance.

A group of mystics have found this portal and stabilised it enough to secure a way through to that Primordial Realm, but they need bold adventurers to go forth and battle for it so that it can be properly imbued for their dubious purposes...

Location

Location of the mystics' camp The mystics' camp can be found just south of the Bounty Hunter volcano, so a quick and easy way to get there is using the games necklace teleport.

Alternatively, you might enjoy a brisk walk through the lower reaches of the Wilderness from either Edgeville or Varrock.

In any case, it is possible to be attacked by revenants while crossing the Wilderness, so you should beware of the danger and pack any valuables safely in your bank before attempting the journey.

Requirements

There are no specific requirements to play Stealing Creation - regardless of your levels, you can help your team be victorious! Of course, because this is a skill- and combat-based minigame, having higher levels across a number of skills will be advantageous.

Note that you will earn combat experience for fighting other players, Thieving experience for pickpocketing, and half Magic experience for casting spells. Gathering clay, processing it, building barriers and so on will not earn you any experience.

Recommended Items

You cannot take any items into Stealing Creation, so there is no need to prepare any equipment.

Using Sacred Clay

The quickest and easiest way to begin playing Stealing Creation is to talk to the Head Mystic, who will explain how it works, following which you can simply jump into one of the fenced-off waiting areas to begin playing in a free-for-all match. While you are waiting, you'll see a small interface indicating how many combat and skill levels each team has.

If you are in a clan and wish to challenge another clan, you can do so using the larger waiting area. Whichever member of the clan enters this area first will be designated the clan leader and can issue challenges or offer alliances to other clan leaders in the area. If you are a clan leader, right-clicking on another leader will allow you to choose 'Challenge' or 'Ally'. To accept an alliance, right-click the person who has offered it and select 'Ally'. Up to three clans can be allied on each side.

After a short wait and assuming there are enough people to play, you will be transported to the Primordial Realm to begin the struggle.

When you arrive, you'll notice a number of tables and a couple of portals, as well as your team mates and a mystic. The tables are used to store sacred clay - which is the object of the game, after all - and you can take any items your team has dropped off from these if you're keen to get out there and start helping. If you're interested to know what sort of resources are available in your local area of the Primordial Realm, you can chat to your team's mystic, who will provide you with a graph showing how much of each type of clay is available.

When you're ready, you can click on one of the portals to get out there and cause some havoc (or gather clay, or make equipment, or steal your opponents' stuff, or...).

Your main objective is to gather clay, which you can either store in its raw form in your team's base (by using it on a table or sending it back with a familiar) or convert into useful equipment or weaponry using the kilns you can find in the area. There are a number of ways to gather the sacred clay, but to start with you will have to pick up clay fragments, so that you can then construct tools to harvest from other, better sources.

Because clay fragments are only ever class 1, you do not need any specific levels to collect it.

When you have some clay, you'll want to convert it into tools so that you can collect higher classes for better equipment. To do so, you will need to take the clay to a creation kiln. To use a kiln, simply click on it while you have some clay in your inventory. There are a small number of rules that control how clay can used at a kiln:

Class 1 clay can only be used to make class 1 items. Higher classes will make the highest level of equipment you are able to make, as long as the clay is good enough (e.g. class 3 clay can make up to class 3 items). class 5 clay will always make the highest class of equipment you are able to make.
Each class of equipment has a level requirement: class 1 can be used by anyone of any level; class 2 requires level 20 in the relevant skill (Mining for a pickaxe, Magic for mage robes, and so on); class 3 requires level 40; class 4 requires level 60; class 5 requires level 80.

To choose an item to make, select the type of equipment you wish to make on the left (weapons, armour, equipment or potions), then the specific item from the list in the middle. The small box in the bottom right shows which types of clay you have in your inventory. The kiln will always try to use the best clay you have available, but you can select a lower class by clicking on it before choosing the item you wish to make.

Assuming you have the clay and an appropriate skill level to make the item with that clay, you will be rewarded with a new item in your inventory.

To begin with, it's probably a good idea to make equipment for gathering better clay, and possibly some barriers to protect resources from your enemy. There are four types of tool, each of which can be used on a specific type of clay resource:

In addition to having the correct tool, you require the following levels to gather these resources depending on the quality of the clay:

Class 1 clay can be gathered by anyone
Class 2 clay requires level 20 in the relevant skill
Class 3 clay requires level 40 in the relevant skill
Class 4 clay requires level 60 in the relevant skill
Class 5 clay requires level 80 in the relevant skill

Sacred clay can also be made into weapons, armour, food and potions. To read more about the different types of weapons and armour available, click here.

The amount that food heals depends on the quality of the clay it is made from, as you might expect.

Class 1 food will heal 4 Hitpoints
Class 2 food will heal 8 Hitpoints
Class 3 food will heal 12 Hitpoints
Class 4 food will heal 16 Hitpoints
Class 5 food will heal 20 Hitpoints

In the same way, the number of doses of a potion is dictated by the quality of the clay, so a class one clay fragment will provide a single dose of a potion, while class 5 clay will supply you with a potion containing 5 doses.

Fighting with Clay

With all of your equipment ready or on its way, you should begin thinking about how to win the game. As stated earlier, the object of the game is to gather clay. Any clay you gather, as well as equipment constructed from it, can be stored in your base by clicking the central table, which will automatically distribute it to a selection of other tables. You can take items from these tables if you do not have the skill requirements to make them yourself, but this will reduce your individual score.

Securing Resources

In addition to collecting clay, your team will be scored according to how many of the resources you control. To control a resource, you must construct barriers around it, which can be made in a creation kiln. You need four barriers to control a resource, which require a Construction level to make and to place.

When you have erected barriers around a resource, only players from your own team will be able to access it, although enemy warriors can attack it to break down the walls. Conversely, you can repair the walls as your foes are attempting to destroy it. Higher class barriers can take more damage before they are destroyed.

Combat

Because there are no restrictions on combat in the Primordial Realm (other than the fact that you cannot attack members of your own team), many adventurers enjoy taking the battle more seriously by attacking their enemies as they gather resources, build items, and so on. This is also a good way of gathering clay, as any foes you defeat will drop all of their items (unless they have a Protect Item prayer active), which you can pick up and return to the tables in your base.

There are no level restrictions on combat: it is entirely possible for a level 138 combat monster to pick on a level 10 skiller! To read more about the awesome combat equipment you can wear and wield in Stealing Creation, click here.

Note that if you die, you will respawn either at your base or the nearest resource your team controls.

Pickpocketing

If direct combat isn't your thing, you'll be pleased to note that the strange atmosphere in the Primordial Realm dulls everyone's senses just enough that those with a more fluid concept of property rights can take advantage of. Although it may be obvious what you're doing, if you are careful and choose your targets wisely, you may be able to make a significant impact on your opponents' ability to gather or retain clay.

You need to have a Thieving level no less than 20 levels below your target's (so you'd need at least 79 to pick someone's pockets if they have level 99). To pickpocket from someone, right-click on them and select 'Pickpocket'. If you are successful and they have any items in their inventory, you will discover yourself to be a little heavier, and them a little lighter.

Fog Banks

Cunning and devious players may enjoy hiding and waiting to ambush their foes as they rush about gathering clay, pickpocketing from unsuspecting foes or chasing people down with a nasty scimitar. The fog banks found in the Primordial Realm are the ideal place to hide, as you become entirely invisible to everyone else while you are in them - you won't even show up on the minimap.

To hide in a fog bank, simply walk/run into it. Note that you cannot shoot, cast spells or summon familiars from within a fog bank.

Altars

In a frantic and fast-paced game like Stealing Creation, it's no surprise that you might need to top up your Prayer points as you go. If you are lucky enough to find yourself in a part of the Primordial Realm that features these altars, you'll discover that they not only restore your Prayer points, but also your run energy and Summoning points, all at once!

If you do not have access to an altar (either because there are none in your area or because they are blocked from you with barriers), you will have to suffice with the potions that can be made at the creation kilns.

Summoning Familiars

Even in the Primordial Realm you can create pouches to summon beasts made of the same clay as everything else. These automatons behave in much the same way as other Summoning familiars, in that they have a number of abilities and you can also make scrolls to activate their 'Clay Deposit' special move.

The clay familiars are a beast of burden (able to carry 1, 6, 12, 18 or 24 items, depending on the clay used to make the pouch) with a range of combat levels (25, 37, 58, 93 or 139, depending on quality) and will remain for the whole game unless they are slain. They can also use the 'Clay Deposit' special move to send clay or items in their inventory to your base.

Winning the Game

As you perform actions throughout Stealing Creation, you will see your score in the top-left of your screen increase. Almost everything you do while in the Primordial Realm will generate these points except taking items from the tables in your base, which will reduce your points. Your individual score is extremely important, as it is these points that determine which rewards you can purchase at the end of the game.

By increasing your score, you also increase your team's score, which is what wins you the game. At the end, when the teams' scores are compared, each member of the winning team will receive a 10% bonus to their individual scores.

Each game lasts 20 minutes, so you have all that time to gather clay and earn points: use it well!

You will earn or lose points for the following:

Gathering sacred clay 15 per class
Processing sacred clay 15 per class
Depositing sacred clay 15 per class
Depositing clay items 30 per class
Withdrawing items from your base Lose the points you would earn for depositing it
Combat 5 per Hitpoints damage done to enemy

Rewards

There are a number of rewards available to those who perform well in Stealing Creation, and it would be difficult to say that the mystics are ungrateful...

Volatile Tool

The volatile tool is a multi-purpose object that you can command to take a new shape. When you do so, it will randomly turn into one of the following: hatchet, butterfly net, hammer, harpoon, knife, needle or pickaxe. These can be used exactly as you would use a normal tool of their type, but provide an extra boost to any experience you earn by using them. The tool will stay in this shape for a certain number of uses before returning to its natural form.

You can transform the tool ten times, after which you will need to use more points to have it recharged.

Morphic Tool

The morphic tool is identical to the volatile tool except that you can choose which of the specific tools it will become. Just like the volatile tool, you will earn bonus experience for using it (which is slightly lower than the bonus from the volatile tool), although it will also return to its natural form after a certain number of uses.

The morphic tool can be transformed into a new shape ten times before you have to return to the mystics to have it recharged.

Sacred Clay Armour and Weapons

Sacred clay armour is a remarkable construction, the secret of which is known only to the most highly ranked of the mystics. In battle, it can be used to switch combat styles completely, not to mention the fact that it provides excellent combat bonuses.

To change the type of armour/weapon you are using, operate it in your worn inventory. All sacred clay armour you are wearing and any sacred clay weapon you are wielding will instantly change to that end of the combat triangle.

As with the other items made from sacred clay, sacred clay armour can be converted to another shape ten times before it has to be recharged. Unlike other items, it will not revert to a 'basic' shape at any time.

So what does everybody think about this?

Behind the Scenes - November

Posted By:  the big m2 @ Nov 3 2008, 08:54 PM
We've written a lot about combat-orientated multiplayer content in RuneScape recently. This mostly focused on the way that it had been relegated to the sidelines, until the introduction of PvP worlds invited it back into the heart of the game. There's one aspect, however, that we haven't mentioned: its relationship with skill-orientated multiplayer content.

We felt that producing a piece of content, which would appeal both to those players who prefer combat and those who prefer non-combat skills, was a major challenge for us. So, we put our thinking caps on and the result is this month’s headline update: 'Stealing Creation'. Stealing Creation will be a new 'safe' minigame, where teams of players work together to control resources across the game area. This area will change each time the game is played, so you will need to keep your tactics varied.

The game will focus on collecting 'sacred clay', thought to be the building blocks used by gods to create worlds. You'll enter the minigame with nothing, which means you'll need to use your skills to gather resources and make the equipment you need to dominate the game. For those of you who are just as happy making swords as you are using them, it will offer lots of choice as to the kind of experience you want to have playing the game. But what of the pure skillers? Can you create equipment for your battling buddies while they defend your back? Can those doing the fighting rely on someone else to make them powerful? With the added ability to fight as a clan, battles can be organised for very specific groups of players. So, if you want to gather with your clan buddies to take on your enemies, you will be able to.

Speaking of enemies, Zamorak was once mortal like the rest of us, but through clever manipulation and some devious planning he became revered as a god in Gielinor. The god wars that followed brought about great destruction and change – it would be impossible to do that now, wouldn’t it? What does it take for something like that to happen? Gathering some of the most important artefacts and keenest minds to research them would be a good start...but that is bound to attract attention, isn’t it?

That’s where our November quest will join things. Specialists and concerned dignitaries will be gathered to discuss the whereabouts of the Staff of Armadyl, an ancient and powerful artefact from RuneScape’s distant past. All they will need is a willing adventurer to conduct the more interesting parts of the...investigation. Will this link to the mysterious dragonkin symbols found recently, or the rumours of the dragon forge? While Guthix sleeps through the centuries, treachery is afoot, and terrible dangers appear on the horizon. In our first Grandmaster quest ever, with the longest, deepest storyline we have ever attempted, it will take an expert adventurer to find out.

Finally, after that huge update will come something much, much smaller! For a few days over the last weekend of November, you’ll notice Thanksgiving turkeys wandering around the map, gobbling and generally minding their own business. Hunt them down for some tasty drumsticks or find the turkeys in disguise for a special reward. Look out for more short celebration updates like this in the future.

Updates after November

The Phoenix

Some months ago, we asked you to vote on the next Summoning familiar, and you chose the phoenix. There were some great discussions on the forums taking the idea far beyond what we had originally imagined, so we decided to expand the idea out to another 'Distraction and Diversion' similar to the Shooting Star update or Bork from the Chaos Tunnels. You’ll find this update (planned for early next year) features not only a new Summoning creature and a repeatable activity, but also a quest!

Mobilising Armies

With any tactical game you need to spend a long time fine-tuning its different aspects to try to make it as fair, balanced and fun as possible. Mobilising Armies, our headline update for December, is no different and we have been working hard to tweak the key scenarios for this: Conflict, Siege, Hoard and Rescue. We'll have more on this update in next month's Behind the Scenes but in the meantime we have another screenshot for you.

Hallowe'en Event and Quest

Posted By:  the big m2 @ Oct 28 2008, 10:47 AM
Maggie, a travelling witch, has come to southern Asgarnia for the holiday festivities, but she's in a bit of a spot. She needs an enchanted broom to finish her potion but her ox has a cold and can't be left alone. In Swept Away, you'll need to visit several nearby witches on Maggie's behalf – and solve a few puzzles along the way.

While you're in the neighbourhood, why not try out the Holiday Event: a bit of trick-or-treating in Draynor, Rimmington and Port Sarim. The towns are decked out in holiday décor and the villagers have treats to distribute to those wearing a suitable costume. If you're interested in some holiday garb, have a chat with Maggie: she's on the look-out for someone who can do a bit of trick-or-treating on her behalf.

Swept Away can be started by talking to Maggie, who is located south of Falador and east of the Crafting Guild. The quest will be available to all players for two weeks; after this time, it will only be available to members. The Hallowe'en decorations and trick-or-treating will only be available during the same holiday period. Any treats remaining in your bank or inventory after this time will disappear after Hallowe'en.

In other news...

A large number of sound effects and changes to sound effects have been added, especially to capes and the skillcape emotes.

Human animations have been extensively modified to stop players appearing to glide around. You should also notice less 'clipping' with items like capes and armour when performing various actions or using emotes.

When you're dismissing a familiar, you can now right-click on the 'Dismiss' button. This will let you skip the confirmation screen, making it easier to dismiss the familiar during combat.

Fairy rings now have a larger clickable area. Previously, it was quite small and potentially difficult to click on, so we've enlarged it to make your journeys quicker.

Adding items to fill up compost bins should now be considerably easier. When you've used one item on the bin, your character will automatically attempt to put any further items of that type into the bin, saving you a bit of clicking.

Metarialus and Blandebir (the brewing chaps in Port Phasmatys and Keldagrim) will now offer to fill all your pots with yeast at once rather than making you go through their conversation for each pot. Using one beer glass on a barrel of freshly brewed beer will also make your character attempt to fill all their beer glasses without any additional clicking, and there's a newly installed water source in the brewery at Port Phasmatys.

Bounty Hunter Combat levels have been updated to reflect recent Combat level changes. The crater entrance requirements are now: 3-55, 50-100 and 95+ (all without Summoning).

Dragon dagger p++ should now be easier to find on the Grand Exchange. We've also taken the opportunity to change some adamant items to use "addy" at the start. This is only for the super poisoned items, namely arrows, daggers and spears.

QuickChat has now been given a predictive search feature to allow you to find the phrases you want more effectively.

A distant rumble has recently been heard just north of Baxtorian Waterfall...

Just about the only thing that interests me in all of that is the "A distant rumble has recently been heard just north of Baxtorian Waterfall..." possibly hinting at the upcoming quest number 150.

15 October 2008 PvP Worlds

Posted By:  dabomb50 @ Oct 25 2008, 06:30 AM
PvP worlds have arrived! Are you ready to pit your combat skills against other players in the halls of the White Knights’ Castle? Are you prepared to fight to the death in the fields of Lumbridge? Well, now is your chance.

To get started, load up the game like normal (click here to read about the changes to the log-in system we've also released today), and then choose 'World Select' on the title screen. Then pick a world which has a tick in the 'skull' column to choose a PvP world. To avoid nasty accidents, if you let the game choose a world for you automatically it will never select a PvP world. Also note that you require a Combat level of at least 20 (not including Summoning) to get into a PvP world.

Before you are logged in, you will be warned that you are entering a PvP world which is a dangerous place: you will lose your items on death and you will not get a gravestone. Upon entering the world for the first time, you’ll be teleported to Lumbridge and given a manual to explain the finer points of PvP worlds.

Here’s a quick run-down of the features:

Fight players (within your level range) anywhere on the map, except in a few safe areas.
Safe areas include banks, respawn points and some guilds.
Level ranges are 10% of your Combat level, plus 5 levels. If you are fighting inside the Wilderness, the Wilderness level is added to this total. Your current attack range is shown on your screen at all times. (The 10% is measured from the higher of the two combatants’ levels.)
Skulling is back – same rules apply. If you initiate combat, you are skulled and on death you will lose all items, with the Protect Item prayer saving one item as normal.
Teleport Block is back in the normal spellbook.
Some minigames are available to play, others are not – please see the Game Guide for more details.
Death drops are back – new rules apply. Drops will be a mixture of items from the defeated opponent’s inventory and items from drop tables specific to PvP worlds. See below for details.

The quality of the drops you get when you PK someone depends on several different factors:

To get a reward from a kill, you also have to risk some items yourself!
To accumulate a possible reward, you have to risk a minimum of 75k of items on a members’ world, or a minimum of 25k of items on a free world.
Note that your three most valuable items won’t count as being risked unless you’ve been skulled, as you wouldn’t lose them.
The longer you spend on a PvP world (outside a safe area) with the required amount of items at risk, the better your possible rewards might become, to reward you for your risk.
The possible reward increases even faster and goes to a higher maximum if you go into a ‘hot zone’.
Note, however, that risking more than the minimum won’t improve your rewards faster, so it’s a good idea to take relatively cheap and useful items that won’t cost you too much to replace if you die.

When you get a successful kill, the exact reward you can claim depends on a number of other factors, including the level difference between you and the value of the items lost by the dying player. Any unclaimed loot is saved for the next kills, so you don't have to worry about it being lost if you kill a low level player.

Don't despair if you are dying a lot and losing a lot of items. The game will detect this and improve your chance of getting decent rewards when you do eventually get a good kill.

The above is a simplified description of how it all works. To prevent cheating there are various other factors taken into account. We've calculated the rewards and rates very carefully, so that a successful PKer should be able to get a good income, and PKers who get lucky might find themselves with a good drop. Higher level players may also get higher rewards to reflect their increased earning ability when not PKing, such that PKing is still worthwhile for them. The aim is to make PKing a fun alternative (albeit very high risk) way of earning money in the game.

Included in the PvP-specific drop tables is a wide range of new combat equipment and XP-boosting gloves. Members will get access to level 78 items for all three corners of the combat triangle, including armour as well as weapons, and a new set of Ancient Magick spells. Non-members will get access to corrupt dragon equipment. To find out more about these items, please visit the Game Guide.

Have fun PKing!

Mod Benny
RuneScape Content Developer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other news...

We've changed the way your Combat level is calculated, so that PKers aren't discouraged from levelling Summoning. It seemed a bit unfair that Summoning increased your Combat level everywhere but couldn't actually be used everywhere. Therefore, your Summoning is now only counted into your Combat level if you have recently summoned a creature or held a Summoning pouch. When you log in, you will see that your Combat level has been split into two numbers (e.g. '75+6'). The first number is your base Combat level, and the second is the potential extra available from Summoning. If you're holding a Summoning pouch or have a familiar, this potential will be added on taking you to your full level.

For example, if you are level 55, this might be shown as follows:

Without a familiar, a Summoning pouch, or having dropped a pouch recently: level 50+5
With a familiar, a Summoning pouch, or having dropped a pouch recently: level 55

Players in the same clan chat channel will now appear as purple dots on the minimap. This is the second highest priority after friends (green) and before other players wearing the same team capes (blue). Note: Being in the same clan won't remove the default attack option in the same fashion as a team cape!

Bogrog has expanded his enterprises even further and will now convert your spare Summoning spell scrolls to shards in a similar way to his already popular pouches to shards service.

The beacons scattered throughout the wilderness will now remember how many logs you've stored at each even after an emergency has arisen (quite literally).

The reward gloves from Fist of Guthix can now be used to pick nettles without injury. Also the Fishing gloves will now give the bonus experience for swordfish in Piscatoris.

Don't get your feathered headdresses all ruffled. You can now craft these useful bits of headwear using the Assist System in addition to the traditional way.

The Corporeal beast has become wise to your tricks and has gained a stomp attack that hurts players standing underneath him. Watch out!,

1 July 2008 - RuneScape HD - Members-Only Beta Launch

Posted By:  Kalt @ Jul 1 2008, 06:58 AM
RuneScape has been reworked and now looks better than ever! If you are a member, you will be able to access this update by following the directions below. If you are a free player, you can expect to be playing RuneScape HD as soon as the Beta period is over. Free players who select RuneScape HD will receive a preview of the new graphics, meaning they can see how it runs on their machines, but will be unable to play in it.

NOTE - this is a live Beta. This means that if you lose or win an item, die or gain experience, it is for real - the effects will remain on your account even after the Beta period is over. Please do not throw away items thinking that you will get them back after the Beta period.

Playing RuneScape HD:

You will notice that the website has been given a fresh lick of paint, but your path to the game remains as simple as before. Click 'Play RuneScape' on the new RuneScape front page to get to the Detail Select page. Then click the right-hand button, 'RuneScape High Detail', to select the new version. Finally, choose your world, and then start playing.

To play RuneScape HD, your computer will need the following system specifications:

* 1.5 GHz processor or higher
* 256MB of RAM or more
* 64MB 3D Graphics card, such as Nvidia® GeForce™ 3 or above
* Sun Java 1.4 or higher

Once the game has loaded, you can use the in-game Graphics Options menu, within your Options tab (the one with the spanner), to further increase or decrease your level of detail. You can also change them on the log in screen. So, if you are experiencing slowdown, try reducing the number of graphical features.

The new fullscreen mode can also be toggled on or off in the in-game Options tab or the log in screen.

When you have set your preferred graphics options, your settings will be remembered as the default every time you log in on that machine. You may change these graphics options at any point.

If you have further questions, or are having trouble playing RuneScape HD, please visit the FAQS, found here.

Playing in the old detail modes:

To access the old High or Low Detail modes, click the left-hand 'RuneScape' button on the Detail Select page. This option manages to be both the old detail modes, rolled into one! You will be able to use the in-game Graphics Options menu to choose the exact level of detail you wish to play in. If you turn everything to minimum you get the old Low Detail mode, and if you turn everything to maximum you get the old High Detail mode.
